Do you have what it takes to be a champion in sales leadership? When you raise your own level of performance, professionalism, and focus, the team follows. You set the tone by your example and results.
Your role as a sales manager is to lead and developsalespeoplee in a way that ensures achievement. The best way to improve the performance of your sales staff is by becoming better yourself. If you achieve, your team achieves.
Character Traits of Champion Sales Leaders
In the businesses I have owned and with my consulting client organizations, I have seen sales managers achieve success. Also, I have seen others fail. I’ve noticed that those who do well (and the many that I have personally mentored) possess the following 13 character traits. How many of these traits do you have?
1. Enthusiastic
Is your natural personality enthusiastic? Enthusiasm not only attracts customers, it draws in your sales team as well.
2. Positive
Do you encourage and edify others? A positive attitude is contagious and spreads to other company departments too.
3. Tenacious
Do you have a tenacious resolve to help others win?
4. Trustworthy
Do you develop believable goals and get buy-in from your team and individual sales team members?
5. Dependable
Do you do what you say you will do for customers, team members, the support teams, and others?
6. Ethical
At work and at home are you honest, genuine and the person others trust?
7. Confident
Do you have confidence in yourself, your company, and the products and services you sell? Are you confident that your team can overcome challenges?
8. Determined
Are you willing to do whatever it takes (ethically, of course) to get the job done with excellence and style?
9. Upbeat
Do you make your work fun, exciting, and enjoyable in the pursuit of attracting and retaining customers?
10. Accountable
Are you responsible and accountable? While it takes teamwork to win, winning sales managers own the results.
11. Role Model
Do you lead by example and influence positively and proactively so that others want to follow you? Keep learning and be what you train and coach.
12. Team Player
Can you play well with others? Being a team player is important. No excuses!
13. Excellent
Can you continually perform with excellence? If you want your sales reps to be better, you must be better yourself. Anyone can do something well once, but excellence is about doing things well time after time.
Even though it may sound like it, you don’t have to be a superhero. The truth is nobody is perfect. If you make a mistake, admit it and learn from it. Practice these character traits every day with every sales rep and every customer. Do it week in and week out, month in and month out. As you do, you will feel more confident, and you will achieve more sales and career success.
